I took a mock aircraft-crash survival course in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, where the terrain and weather tested everything I thought I knew about being prepared. It pushed me to work out exactly which gear earns its place when conditions turn — lightweight, reliable, and ready for the backcountry.

That course was the turning point. It drove me to sift through countless options and build kits around the life-saving essentials that belong in any serious adventurer's pack — on the trail, off-grid, or in the cockpit.
